Van Gogh Valentines!

hello again!
i am back from a long summer of recovery. the three months after school were filled with much sleep food and video streaming. it felt so good not doing something that i mostly did not feel guilty. that being said i love doing stuff and making stuff. sometime around the second week of august i woke up from my summer slumber and hit the ground running.

I have alley art fest to get ready for and not so much time to do so!

alley art fest also presents an opportunity to debut one of my college daydream creations: Van Gogh Valentines!IMG_4697

a chocolate ear wrapped in bloody newspaper presented as a gift. based on the story of vincent van gogh and his ear cutting incident in which he gave the severed ear to a ms.rachel, a prostitute he “knew”.

hence, it seems appropriate it would be a good valentines day gift (or christmas gift since the whole ordeal happened a couple of days before christmas).

wow! holiday stress!

yum! chocolate ear!

if you would like to experience a van gogh valentine for yourself or give one to a loved one, i have created a very limited supply to be sold at alley art fest this upcoming saturday in aurora, il.

making these guys was very fun experience that combines my love of packaging, graphic design, product development, diy and chocolate but the productions of these guys by one girl is…impractical!

on the business side of things, if they do take off and people do like them as much as i do then i will take further action on contacting a chocolatier and getting these out to those in need of chocolate ears. in the mean time i will take seasonal orders for valentines day 2015 and maybe christmas. feel free to contact me if you are interested. i will probably post more on that subject and i develop this project further along with my other art.

in the meantime, here’s a walk through through my journey in creating Van Gogh Valentines!

the idea came around my junior year at the academy.

a few friends were talking about a bake sale for a school club and quickly my mind went racing with thinking up something i could contribute. as usual i wanted to make something clever out, of the ordinary and generally delightful. sorta like those cake eggs i made years ago, but more practical when opening them…and in the chaos of the neurons making connections in my brain the idea of Van Gogh Valentines happened!

there was a quite a bit of  scheming and designing. i even went so far as to work on my own chocolate ear model and bought the silicone to create a mold. sadly food grade silicone is pretty expensive and i only have one ear mold carved. the whole process of making my own mold tray was a bit out of my hands at the moment. plus, with school being school the project went to the bottom of the work queue after a few weeks. ear model

jump to a couple of weeks ago when out of the blue i decided to revisit the project!

one morning i just researched chocolate making, found some nice candy ear molds that fit my general idea and ordered the best chocolate i could buy with my sad budget (ghirardelli).

that same day i started redeveloping the logo.logos

i resolved to use my fanciest attempt at handwriting and calligraphy ear drawing (based on van goghs self portraits of course) and then combined it with handpainted watercolour stains.newspaper

the newspaper packaging itself was a huge time consuming event. the problem was trying to develop something that was practical to make, elegant and a graceful experience when opening. the final solution was a simple envelope.

the contents of the valentine also had to explain the joke for those not so familiar with the story.IMG_4653

creating the chocolate ears was simple enough, but as much as i try to be good at everything, working with chocolate is not one of them! ill leave that to the chocolatiers.

i know paper, they know chocolate.

some newsy stuff

hello there!

just wanted to let you guys in on some new stuff i just posted in my sketchbook gallery.

and a few newsy things:

today, “el día de los niños” fair is up in downtown aurora, thanks to the aurora hispanic heritage advisory board….for more info click here! there will be a lot of free activities for the wee nippers, including some hand drawn posters by javi terrazas, miguel sz and myself that are to be painted by the children at the fair (thanks javi for organizing this!). so, if you are in the area and have a wee one or two that need some cultural entertainment, stop on by and visit the roots aurora tent to collabourate with aurora artist!

i think that’s it for now…

have a lovely weekend!

Almost Summer!

greetings!

i am officially almost graduated, there is still the matter of tying the loose ends (such as walking around with a fancy robe and getting it in writing…), but still, i have a Bachelors of Fine Arts!

now what??? (;° 0°)

am i more of an “artist”? maybe less of an “artist”?

who knows?

i do know that now i have to go out there and put my skills and talents to use. i’ll be honest, it’s hard not having deadlines. the body still wakes up at 5:30 a.m., trying to catch the 6:47 express to chicago. there is a sudden feeling of purposelessness, a craving for netflix and buzzfeed lists of pop culture references, and a reluctance to clear of my mod podge crusted desk (and it doesn’t help that it’s been overcast these past few days…)

floating in space.

to be honest, stuff like this is expected. i’ve heard of others having similar symptoms or worst. would it silly to imagine it wouldn’t happen to me? then again, it’s not as bad as it could be! i am posting on my blog, there are notebooks filled with ideas waiting to be executed. it is spring and there is pollen and rebirth in the air. 🙂

while i try to figure this career thing out more thoroughly, heres a lovely picture of a fish i made you guys as well as as a new graphic design gallery (a work in progress) featuring some of my favorite work i did for the aurora public library.

Sardines! In a can and with some carrots

hello! here’s another juicy post with new work and a few GIFS!!!

first up is the new member to the fish family, leafy fish. he is made similarly to the rest of the guys, except he isn’t based off any real fish per se. i wanted to make a transformative fish to get into my graduation portfolio that lightly references my carrot fish piece from earlier.

the second mobile in the collection is sardines in a can. eight little blue pilchards freed from the confines of the can freely looking around at our dry world. how fun!

lemon carrot is the latest mobile in the collection

this mobile is mostly further study into the process of making paper food and mobile design. i also wanted to create a scene where the fish aren’t really food themselves but instead admiring the food around them, such as we as terrestrial creatures often look at fish in wonder.

oh! but before i forget! just some notes, i’ve done a bit of updating to the site including some new galleries and including fantastic fish and a few illustration galleries. they have a few additional things i haven’t packed into a post just how the sketchpad page has some extras too.

bye bye friends, hope to see ya soon!

love,

Fish Dinner Mobile

hey guys! whats up?

check this out! haven’t worked with gifs since high school but its probably the best way to share my fishy mobile online

it’s my fish dinner mobile!!!!

ヽ(*⌒∇⌒*)ノ

Fish Dinner Mobile

the mobile hangs from a fork and knife (stolen from mom’s kitchen). all the pieces of the mobile are watercolour, paper, aluminum foil and a ton of mod podge! i am so excited about it, if feels great to escape the flat painting surface and create something animated we can interact with.

plus, it’s still watercolored…so it fits my major! hehe…

making this mobile was quite the adventure. believe it or not there are not very many “starter books” on designing mobiles. there are  books on calder’s work and a few paper mobile template books but nothing at the library that gives the basics. after the fact, i did find a kindle book on the subject. its called making creative mobiles by timothy rose. i’ve yet to read it, but i’ll get to it soon ;). still, balancing out the mobile wasn’t too hard. just time consuming. it’s all problem solving (which i love). i did learn that it is easier to work your way up instead of down when adjusting.

(oh and here’s a youtube clip)

i am fish crazy right now. currently in progress is a sardine mobile, hopefully finished by sunday afternoon. I spent all of today working on getting this piece documented for a couple of show submissions, so there is a TON to do! ….busy busy busy….@.@ especially with the  semester is coming to an end soon! so much to print, prepare and present! ahhh!

bug ya soon!

xoxo
